Subject: Concerning the Risks of Google’s AI Overview and Persistent Shared-Link Profiles
To the relevant authorities of the European Union,
We would like to bring to your attention an emerging international concern regarding Google’s “AI Overview” feature and its recently introduced shared-link mechanism. These functions have been observed to generate and preserve inaccurate personal profiles, affiliations, and biographical information, even after such information has been deleted or corrected by the individuals concerned.
In particular:
• Deleted social media profiles have been retained for several months and repeatedly used to generate false personal data.
• Academic titles, professional affiliations, and book supervision credits have been incorrectly attributed to unrelated individuals, including medical professionals without the relevant qualifications.
• In certain cases, the AI system altered the geographical location of medical institutions or misrepresented individuals as employees of private companies.
• The shared-link feature creates persistent URLs that preserve erroneous information indefinitely, allowing outdated or false data to circulate even after corrections are made.
These issues may constitute violations of core principles of the GDPR—especially those concerning data accuracy, purpose limitation, and the right to rectification—as well as raise concerns under the forthcoming AI Act, which mandates transparency and safeguards against misleading AI-generated content.
Given the cross-jurisdictional nature of large-scale AI systems and their global impact on individuals’ rights, we kindly request the European Union to consider investigating these mechanisms and, where appropriate, to engage in dialogue with relevant international partners.
